When copying large number of files (say over 30,000) from internal harddisk to external USB 2.0 harddisk, it stops in the middle of the operation. Have tried a few times and the result varies. 1st trial stops at 1/3 of the batch, 2nd trial stops at half of the batch, 3rd trial stops at somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the batch. It never completes the copy operation. Though it won't continue to copy, the program allows me to 'cancel' and exit. Version 1.22 has no such problem.
Enter the new description here, and press "Save" when you are finished.
How to reproduce
Copy a large number of files (say over 30,000) from internal harddisk to external USB 2.0 harddisk.
Same problem

I also have this problem. I have tried twice to copy 65,000 files of about 1GB between two SATA drives; the first time failed within 200GB and 30k-ish files, and the second time failed after about 500GB and 64,000+ files.
Confirmed bug

I've been using Teracopy 2.12 for 3 weeks now. I'm making several copies of 2 TBs of data. I have confirmed that Teracopy will crash if you try to copy too much at 1 time. It can do about 200 GB reliably. Higher than that and it starts to crash. I have reproduced the behavior on several different computer and drive configurations. The program really should be called Gigacopy, because there is no way it can reliably copy a terabyte.
Problem still present
Posted by Guest user (guest), May 26, 06:25
I'm encountering the same problem with Teracopy 2.12 on 64bit Win7 Pro machine. Reproduced it several times.
Situation: trying to copy 540k files (32G from internal harddisk to USB2 disks. Freeze occurs at around 30 - 40%

I'm in the process of transferring over 1.5TB of files from my old computer to a new one, primarily using an external HDD as the shuttle mechanism. This is the first time I've used TeraCopy. I like the display and a lot of the features, but when copying from HDD to USB Ext HDD, or USB Ext HDD to USB Ext HDD, the copying process locks up about halfway through. It only happened a couple of times, but it was a hassle when it did. Also, after completing the copying I've gotten several DEP error messages, and Windows Explorer was shut down. At least it did it after the copying was finished. But something is obviously wrongwith this software, and I don't think I can continue to use it unless or until this/these issues are resolved. It's a well-intended program, but if it can't copy files consistently w/o problems, it defeats the whole purpose.
I got the same behaviour severl times. TC is not reliable.
Posted by Guest user (guest), Feb 23, 01:07
The bug cost lots of time, it is essential because it is the main feature of the TC to copy files.
Remark: I tried to copy several GB of data from USB disk via 100 Mbit LAN connection, duration up to 6 hours.
When will this problem be fixed
Posted by GeoffM (GeoffM), Feb 01, 21:09
Hi Guys,
This bug renders the product virtually unusable as it does not perform the intended function (to reliably copy a large number of files from a to b.
When will the bug be fixed? It is still present in v2.1
Terracopy hangs in the middle of copying or moving files.
Posted by Guest user (guest), Dec 27, 17:35
I have had this problem several times with v2.01 when transferring files between any two external USB hard drives. I am using Windows XP Pro on my desktop computer and Windows Vista Home on my laptop. Same problem on both systems. My workaround has been to break down the process into several processes of smaller amounts of files.
Similiar Bug - but only by copieing 20 files!
Posted by Guest user (guest), Dec 27, 04:11
I had this bug for more than one time since I installed v.2.01 few days ago (so I'm thinking about turning back to some beta of 2.0!).
Well, this bug rises by trying to move a folder to another one, where a folder with the same name of the moving one still exists. - Only single files are going to be moved, and the other files are left in the moving folder.
Nevertheless the bug has just another face: all files are copied, but the start folder is not deleted, so that I have to do this manually.

i think it has something to do with testing/verifying the file, try turn off "allways test after copy"
when i turn that off it will copy fine for me, there is a big in that code using 2.07 Beta on win7 64-bit
Same behavior detected
Posted by Guest user (guest), Nov 05, 04:37
I have detected the same behavior when the filename is too long (Lot of directories levels and long names) => TeracCopy is 'paused'.
If it try to do the same copy with windows (i.e. without TeraCopu Software), I get the message 'Filename too long'.
If I rename my directories and/or filename to have a smaller full path/filename, the TeraCopy works well.
Thanks for your support
Win7 x64, Two Internal SATA Drives, 90000 files for 415GB

Using TeraCoppy 2.01:
I have this exact same problem copying from one internal drive to another. Copy hangs 1/3 of the way through - no errors, no indication of any problem other than the copy stopping. I can close the program easily and restart the copy, skipping already copied files, but I usually have to do this several times to get all the files copied. Files being copied are data and not system files.
This clearly is not fixed.
can be reproduced on XP
Posted by Guest user (guest), Oct 04, 11:54
The Copy Process stops after some Time copying many files - and i observed, that TC had 1,5 GB Virtual Memory assigned when it stopped. It looks to me like TC won't free the used Memory copying a file...
Teracopy has also been hanging up my system.
Posted by Guest user (guest), Sep 27, 03:26
Latest Teracopy has also been hanging up my system for long times while trying to perform large file transfers, when it stops and the program hangs. Definately NOT fixed!
Tera Copy even crashes not started move jobs.
Posted by Guest user (guest), Sep 14, 03:39
At the Moment I'm triying to move three sets of Data to three different places from NAS to external USB HDD on the PC.
The first set ist almost 100 GByte for 402 files and it is paused after almost 2 GByte.
The second set is almost 90 GByte 384 files large and it is (still) working.
The third set is almost 50 GByte 11 files waiting
A couples of minutes ago I got an error message from Teracopy that it crashed.
It is the third set, the one who is waiting, that crashed.
I can tell since I neither can cancel nor start this task. I have to kill the process in order to get rid of it.
When I click on the "3 operations" in the Move-Box, everything seems to work, in every box I see the other two tasks.
Since I had this trouble also the other day I rebootet PC but it didn't help.
Yesterday, I tried to move the same files from NAS to NAS but same crashing-problem.
I'm just wondering where I can get version 2.06 of TeraCopy, I didn't find it under download.
Thanks
cancel makes the copying seem to resume, but actually cancels copying (as one would suspect)
Posted by Guest user (guest), Sep 13, 08:09
in my previous post I wrote that "cancel" seemed to help make TC resume the hanging process. That's unfortunately as stupid as I had suspected in the first place: TC indeed stops "hanging" after a hearty click on "cancel", but TC then indeed cancels the copying queue, and goes over to testing... So sorry for the misleading post below. TC would be a terrific piece of software if this particular "hanging" problem was solved.
same prob and strange speed display since resuming
Posted by Guest user (guest), Sep 13, 08:03
copying stopped at 99,6% of 230GB (36000 files). Got it to resume copying by helplessly trying combinations of pause, skip and cancel, eventually it just skipped the one file that it had agonized over.
Now the test is running, and the speed display constantly but wrongly says "12kB/s" (143d left). True speed is ca. 16MB/s I would guess.
Maybe this finding helps identify the root cause. I am using TC Version 2.04b (had started the copy job before I learned about the new version here).
Strangely, as I type this , the other copy job also has just stopped at 51% of 90GB (15000 files), at 0 bytes of 16MB of a seemingly insuspicious file. Actually, it's been the "cancel" button that made TC respond again and skip the "hanging" file. Now it says it's running at 4kB/s, 241d left... (but obviously it's also ca 15MB/s actually)

ok - this has become quite frustrating as I need something like TeraCopy very desperately - but it needs to be more reliable. I'm trying to backup my NAS which has 1TB of files. Can anyone here recommend an alternative solution that works? I've asked codeSector for a debug version so that I can help them debug this issue, but it seems they have no interest since i've gotten zero replies.

Having same issue copying between two internal SATA drives using 2.06. TeraCopy appears to continue working and can be stopped, but simply freezes in the middle of a file copy (typically large, but not always). I've been trying to get the thing to work usefully on a backup job for a full 24 hours now and nothing works.
Same Problem to me (2.06)
Posted by Guest user (guest), Aug 25, 16:15
TC randomly stops
while I copy a large number of files/folders together. (over 100 MB with
combination of large and small files…) 2.06 seems working slightly better than
the older (2.01) version. However, it still happens and makes TC unusable for
such large job. I was copying files from internal (SATA) to an external eSATA
drive.
Same Problem here.
Posted by leecherman (leecherman), Aug 22, 13:43
When trying to copy large files size TC freeze and stopped.
this issue when copying between internal to external drive AND
also between the internal drive such (local C and local D).
this with all TC v2.0 and above that i have tried.
So i hope to fix it soon because it's a big problem.
Any eta for a fix?

This issue with TC stopping in the middle of the file transfer is NOT fixed in v 2.06. I hope that listing it as "fixed" does not mean the issue is not being investigated and hopefully fixed in the next revision. Tried a couple of other sync utilities (TreeComp3, FreeCommander, etc.), and TeraCopy is by far the fastest. If not for this bug, it would be the perfect copy program..... I wonder if a debug version of TC with a timeout counter on all operations, to help identify what is going on when it stops in the middle of the transfer, makes sense. I have seen access rights issues with some files on the destination drive, while trying out other sync programs on my system, with Windows stating that a directory or file is "in use" or "locked by another process" - going in with Unlocker Assistant I get "no process is locking this file" but at least I can delete the "locked" file or directory from UnlockerAssitant, then copy again from source and all is good. Yes, Norton Antivirus Corporate 8.1.1. is running in the background, as is Spybot, but they did not get in the way before, and I've been running them for years (XP SP3).
I have the same issue today

I copy file from one of my usb external harddisk to another usb external harddisk. It hugh, 600GB and I go to sleep.
When I wake up, system went to stand by and the copy process finish only 60GB~. I check my system and remove all stand by option and do the copy process sagain.
It stop again without the stand by issue, copy only 100 GB
I think there is something overflow in the TerraCopy. (I guess) and I do not know or maybe my harddisk faulty ?
Now, I use another copy software to check it. If I have the same issue maybe it is my harddisks faulty. If the copy process successful then I think TerraCopy have bug.
I use TerraCopy 2.06. The newest version.

I also get the same issue, stops after a while, first it ran 750GB, then now it stops after 75GB, 100GB.
upgraded to the beta version, same issue. it copies at constant 95MB/s.
This bug is NOT fixed in 2.06, please change back the status.....
Posted by Kitonne (kitonne), Jul 27, 07:53
The issue is very much present with 2.06 and large data sets - it fails for me with data sets as small as 47GB and 104,625 files, when copying from a Linkstation Duo Pro NAS to a local NTFS drive under XP Pro SP3. As long as data sets are small (couple of G it seems to work fine, but with larger datasets it says COMPLETE well before all the files are processed (test mode). Second bar graph indicates correctly that only 40 or 80% of the files are processed, but the program stops processing the next file in line. Program Manager thinks Teracopy still runs, and it does take some resources on one core (have a quad core AMD 920) but nothing happens. The files in the details view when it happens are failry small, anywhere from 43 bytes to 10Mbytes, and the files immediatly before or after are in the same order of magnitude (no ISO files of hundreds of MB or gigabyte range). 2.06 responds to CLOSE better then 2.05, but it still has the problem. I also tried 2.01, and it has the same issue, so the problem has been around for a while.
Windows XP Pro SP3 Terra Copy 2.06 beta crash due to x number of windows open?
Posted by deadkatz (deadkatz), Jul 25, 16:00
Copying from ClarkConnect Linux Box to a Windows NTFS drive on local system; non system disk.
Copy
from 3 mapped network samba shares from "My Computer" to 3 seperate
destination directories with two active copy processess and one queued.
200+GB total.
Was using Firefox briefly before the error dialog box was shown. Copy process still active. Saved bug report but do not see where I can upload it so that it may be of some use.
Attempted
to use Terra copy 1.22 to copy/queue different source/destination
directories. Installed Robocopy and Richcopy in attempt to do so to no
avail. Later realized the beta (2.06) version of Terra Copy did this,
as opposed to version 1.22.
1.22 failed as well
Posted by Kitonne (kitonne), Jul 25, 15:48
I had seen below a comment above that version 1.22 is working fine, so I tried it out on my XP SP3 computer (AMD 920 Phenom II quad core 2.8GHz, 8GB RAM, dual boot Win 7 / XP Pro SP3, 4870 video card w 1G. It worked fine for a little while, then it just stoped - it is staying there, doing nothing. In Task Manager it is "running" and takes 7 to 95% or CPU time, on a single core. Task manager reports Teracopy takes 919,252K of RAM. System still has well over 1.6GB of Available RAM in Task Manager. It stopped after copying 63,007 of 867,778 files and 219.13GB of 436.75GB. In the log there are a couple of files which failed due to "Target > 255 characters" but the last 12 files before hanging up were copied correctly.
In addition, Version 2.06 virus found Win32/Heur

2.06 did not fix the problem for me either - XPx32 SP3
Posted by Guest user (guest), Jul 25, 09:38
Stoped after 185.2GB out of 436.75GB, 662899 files out of 867778 on XP Pro SP3 (32 bits). Do not know if it makes sense to try it out under Win 7 x64 as well, as it is clearly still broken.
Version 1.22 died as well when presented with the full directory - for now, will try copy data sets smaller then 50GB and keep my fingers crossed that 2.07 will fix the problem....
oops ... it seems version 2.06 did not solve the problem

Test: Copy large number of files (58,325 files having a total of 300.91G from WD My Book Home Edition 1TB (eSATA) to USB 2.0 external harddisk Result: Copy process stops at 20.7% completion I just wanted to send an attachment using the 'Attach a file to this issue' option but failed. How can I upload my test result screen capture?
Same issue on both XPx32SP3 and Win7 x64
Posted by Kitonne (kitonne), Jul 24, 07:55
Copy process stops when copying large number of files (480GB data set, 900,000 files). Under XPx32, it stops after 30-40GB, under Win7 x64 it copied about 180GB before it stopped. Copying files from a network server unto an external ESATA drive.
Same problem

I got the exact same problem with 2.01, it stops in the middle of the operation as described by other users.
It happends when i copy from internal HD to external HD via USB 2.0
Correction: Saw this with v2.0 beta 4a
Posted by Guest user (guest), Jul 22, 14:43
I was the one who wrote on July 20th that I had seen this behavior with v2.0b4, but when I doublechecked the version that I'd been using it was actually v2.0 beta 4a. My apologies - I don't want to be giving out inaccurate information since it might hamper your bug search.

Now I merely use ver 1.22. Though there are some minor bugs, that 1.22 works relatively stable and at least it can copy all the files that I wanted to. I think the primary objective of a copy program is to copy files without any error.

Copying stops at the beginning of a file, or in the first megabyte.
Stop happens more frequently when many files are involved, but can be reproduced (rarely) with just a few hundred large files.
Saw this with v2.0b4
Posted by Guest user (guest), Jul 20, 15:48
Just wanted to add to the other 2 people's reporting of this bug by saying that I saw this behavior with the v2.0 beta that was available for a long time (a year or so?), which I'm almost positive was v2.0b4. So the bug was apparently introduced at or prior to v2.0b4.

I had exactly the same problem while trying to copy some 50.000 files (~300G) from one external drive to another one. i'm using teracopy 2.01. do you guys need more information on this? are there any log files etc.?
